Using a controller

Post by Vell26 on Mon Aug 31, 2015 11:00 pm

Is there any way I can use my controller to play this game? I normally use my Xbox 360 controller for gaming on my laptop, and thought I should try it for this game as well. So I plugged my controller in & started Gen 0. But it didn't work. So is there a special way to play using a controller? Or can we only use the keyboard?

Unfortunately, there is not a natural way to use a controller with RPG Maker XP(the program this is made from) as you would with Steam, for instance.

However, you can still use a controller with some external program downloading. You'll want to Google "xpadder" and download that. For 360 controller, nothing else would be needed. For a PS3 controller, you'd need DS3 tool.

Xpadder makes it so you map out controller buttons and can just assign keys to them. So like the 'a' button can have 'c' assigned to it, and the 'b' button can have 'x' assigned to it.

This gives me an idea to do a tutorial on this later. I may get around to that ^_^ But xpadder really isn't too hard to grasp if you follow the directions.

Hope this helps!

Is there a site to download it for free? Or should I just pay the $9.99 for it?

Huh? You have some bad Google skills, bro... lol. I found it for free in literally 5 seconds. I opened the tab, typed in the search and it was the first link :p   I think there are paid versions, but it's free normally.

Here it is.

I found it free on multiple sites. The problem was after I would download it, Xpadder wouldn't open because it wasn't compatible with my version of Windows OS. Even though I use Windows 8. But I think it was because I use Bing.

I think that is a sign of bad life choices in general.. XD

And you should be able to select the compatibility mode in there to work with Win8. I had it on there when I had Win8.

This is the same version I downloaded yesterday. It wont work on my laptop for some reason.

Here is a screenshot of Xpadder denying me its wonderful controller-ness.

Have you tried right clicking it and selecting properties and then go to the compatibility options and change them?

Ok I just changed the compatibility Mode to Windows 8. Then I opened Xpadder & set up the buttons. I finally opened Generation 0 hoping for the best, but was shot down immediately. I am terrible at computers apparently. All those years & my parents hard-earned money was wasted on public school computer's classes.

Hahahahaha darn. What do you mean by shut down immediately?

You just map the buttons so they appear, hit next and then you can apply the keyboard buttons to them and you're good to go.

I mean I hoped plugging the controller in would automatically let me use it for any game. Then you said to use Xpadder to make the computer recognise my controller instead of the keyboard. Now I'm confused & tired & just want my mommy to tell me everything's ok.

Hahahahaha.

Wellllll, life doesn't work that way.  There's no magical fairy dust to make a controller that wasn't made to be compatible, be compatible, without some work :p  Steam is the only one with direct controller integration.

And it really isn't all that difficult.. lol.

All you do is download Xpadder.

  • Extract and install and stuff.

  • Plug in your controller.

  • Run Xpadder.

  • Find the controller you have and load the controller picture for it(don't have to do that, but it makes it easier).

  • Go through the pages and follow the directions and get to the spot where when you press a button the little buttons pop up on screen, including dpad.

  • Then on the next page, where when you higlight over a box it lights up, click the box and then a keyboard will pop up.

  • Then select the corresponding key you want it to be.

  • Let's say you want the 'a' button to be 'enter'.   Press a on your controller and the box will light up.

  • Click it, then select 'C' from the keyboard.

  • Bam, now that button presses 'C' whenever pressed.

  • All you do then is once you assign the buttons you start the game and just play.

I figured it all out. I just hadn't clicked on the buttons to map them to the controller buttons. I feel like an idiot. Now to save myself from further embarrassment, I must perform harakiri. Unless you could just delete this whole post so no one can know of my shame.

Prolly a bit :p And you'd be surprised at how many people comment on the Gen 0 FB page asking what the name of the game is. So I encounter people every day that don't pay attention to anything :p

Such is the nature of our instant gratification nation, I suppose.

You're right. And on behalf of my fellow self-entitled Americans, I would like to give you a heart-felt apology. Unfortunately, as a natural-born American, my ego is too indlated to try such a thing. So instead, I accept your apology for making a game that would dare to confuse my fellow Americans of the name and/or location of downloading said game. MURICA!!

Hahahahaha. That is how it would go in this society, too :p I rescind my imaginary apology and I shall slap you with a fish!

lol... Okay, it's getting a bit off topic now XD But yeah Very Happy I'm glad you got the controller working. Maybe I should do a video that I'd post on the forums... That could be a good idea. Remember to post in the forum with your feedback :3 I need more regulars here lol.
